BioInnovate UBC Speaker Series

Speaker 2: Dr. Amrit Singh (Nov 21st, 5-6pm)
Dr. Amrit Singh is an accomplished computational biologist whose work lies at the intersection of pharmacogenomics, multiomics, and biomarker discovery. He completed his Honours BSc in Biology and Mathematics at McMaster University in 2010 and earned his PhD in Experimental Medicine at the University of British Columbia in 2016 under Dr. Scott Tebbutt. Dr. Singh went on to conduct a post-doctoral fellowship with the PROOF Centre of Excellence under Drs. Bruce McManus and Raymond Ng from 2016 to 2020. Following his role as a principal statistical analyst at Bayer Pharmaceuticals, Dr. Singh joined UBC in 2022, where he now leads a lab focused on heart and lung pharmacogenomics.
In his lab, Dr. Singh’s research centers on identifying biomarkers for heart and lung conditions such as asthma and heart failure. His work incorporates high-throughput biological datasets (or "omics") to develop innovative methods for multiomics data integration. One of his notable contributions is the creation of DIABLO, a classification tool for multiomics data integration, which is part of the larger mixOmics project. Collaborating closely with clinicians and wet-lab scientists, Dr. Singh’s research leverages patient cohorts, model systems, and advanced single-cell and spatial technologies to understand disease mechanisms, with the ultimate aim of advancing drug repurposing strategies.
Join us in LSC 1003 from 5-6pm on Nov 21st to hear Dr. Singh share his insights on computational approaches to unravel complex diseases and discuss the impact of multiomics data in the quest for personalized therapies.

Speaker One
Our first speaker will be Dr. Johan Foster of the department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. He will be speaking on topics such as:
- Engineering implantable materials.
- Anti-bacterial and anti-fungal drugs and scaffolds.
- Wound healing scaffolds.
- His career and career paths for students interested in biotechnology and life sciences.
This would be a great opportunity to learn more about Dr. Foster and the subjects he is discussing. There will also be an open floor at the end of the event, so bring your questions and chat with one of UBC's finest professors.
